Available Humanities Experiential Learning Opportunities:

Applications for internship and experiential learning funding will be accepted beginning April 9, 2025.

    • Special Collections: The University Libraries’ Special Collections department helps to preserve history related to Memphis, the Mid-South, and the University of Memphis. The Department is seeking an intern to help us rehouse one of our most widely used collections, the Memphis Press-Scimitar clippings files. This collection contains valuable history related to our community and includes original documents, images, and newspaper clippings. The intern would assist archives staff with the rehousing at risk materials into archival storage meant for longevity. They will contribute to in-house documenting to help make the collection more searchable for the library’s staff. 
    • Government Publications: As the Federal Regional Depository Library for the state of Tennessee and a depository for Tennessee state documents, the University Libraries Government Publications team is committed to providing access to federal and state government information. The collection includes print documents, maps, microfiche, CDs, DVDs, and born-digital content. The intern may assist with projects such as relocating materials, sorting and rehousing maps, digitizing documents, and processing materials to make them findable for researchers through our online catalog.
    • Information Access Services: The Information Access Services department supports all aspects of resource acquisition, description, access, and discovery. The intern would assist with interlibrary loan functions, such as book retrieval, mail processing, scanning, and collection development activities to support the accuracy and relevance of the University Libraries' holdings. 
    • Digital Commons: The University Libraries produces media content such as podcasts and video presentations for the Digital Commons institutional repository. The intern would assist the Digital Initiatives Librarian with recording, producing, and editing library-related podcasts. Interns would also help film and stream library events and edit and caption the videos produced from these events, along with other video production work.
    • Research & Instruction: The Research and Instructional Services (RIS) Department of the Libraries supports researchers through various services and digital learning materials. RIS is seeking an intern to help create and conduct user testing on instructional materials, including videos, tutorials, and modules, and assist with maintaining and updating online research guides and FAQs.
    • Music Library: The Efrim and Caroline S. Fruchtman Music Library serves the Rudi E. Scheidt School of Music faculty and students, the University of Memphis, and the local community. As a specialized library, its staff are subject experts and can assist with a wide range of reference questions and research needs. The intern would assist with collection management projects to make library resources more discoverable and assist students with research and reference needs.
    • Health Sciences: The Baptist Memorial Health Care Library (Health Sciences Library) is a vital resource for academic research, serving a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and the greater Memphis community, and located on the second floor of the Community Health Building, the library provides health information services, technology access, and instruction. The intern would assist the Health Sciences Librarian and staff research academic databases and other information sources to identify new trends in health sciences information and instruction services and develop activities to promote library services among students and faculty. 
    • Lambuth Library: The University Libraries’ L.L. Gobbel Library (on the Lambuth Campus in Jackson, TN) has an extensive collection of archival material relating to the history of this campus, which previously housed Lambuth University (1991-2011), Lambuth College (1924-1990), and The Memphis Conference Female Institute (1839-1924). The library seeks an intern to help us with this collection, including photos, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, original documents, memorabilia, and more. The intern would assist library staff in organizing, rehousing, digitizing, and researching archival material (primarily photos) to make the collection more searchable and accessible to the public.

    • Digital Projects/Preservation Intern: Work onsite and in collaboration with librarians and archivists at the Memphis Public Library as part of the DIG Memphis Digital Archive. Work on digital project initiatives, including digitizing archival material for preservation, processing digital reproductions, and supplying metadata for digital objects following MPL’s internal workflow. Use archival materials to conduct primary research and synthesize primary and secondary sources into public-facing history writing.

    • Program Intern/Camp Counselor: Five-week summer camp during June, serving children and adults with special needs and disabilities

    • Program Intern—Family Stability Center (FSC): The intern will support Family Stability Center staff and assist with various administrative tasks, including data entry, document organization, and program communication. Responsibilities include updating the FSC Program Manual and Toolkit, creating departmental forms, and assisting with filing and office organization. The intern will also help with participant and community partner communications, including answering calls, sending digital messages, and preparing outreach materials.
    • Data and Evaluation Intern—Research and Continuous Improvement: The intern will collaborate with  Knowledge Quest's Research and Continuous Improvement department to assist in key data collection and evaluation tasks across all four KQ programs. Potential tasks may include data collection and entry, conducting data quality audits, documenting program processes, contributing to developing a "data dictionary," overseeing the implementation of surveys, and more. 
    • Preschool Intern—Early Childhood Academy: As a Preschool Intern, you'll gain hands-on experience in early childhood education, assist our skilled educators, and help foster a nurturing and engaging environment for our little learners to thrive. The intern will work closely with an experienced teacher, develop and implement creative activities for preschool children, and support our young students' social, emotional, and educational development.
    • Program Intern—Extended Learning Academy: The intern will collaborate with facilitators to deliver engaging activities and workshops, support the academic, social, and recreational growth of participating youth, and gain hands-on experience in a fun, community-focused, and educational environment. 
    • Program Intern - Green Leaf Learning Farm: The intern will gain hands-on experience in urban agriculture, sustainability, and community wellness.  Interns will assist with farm operations, educational programming, and outreach efforts to promote food security and agricultural literacy. Additionally, the intern will assist with planting, harvesting, and maintaining crops; support farm-based education programs for youth and community members; engage in sustainable farming practices, composting, and soil health management; help coordinate volunteer activities and farm events; and conduct research on urban agriculture and local food systems. 
    • Human Resources Intern: The Human Resources intern will support the Human Resources department, handling various administrative and operational tasks. This intern will be involved in setting up and maintaining personnel files, participating in the company’s onboarding process, screening resumes, conducting background checks, and maintaining employee benefits files. Other areas will include data management, compliance and communication with internal and external customers.
    • This is an opportunity for students to help conduct primary source research to document seismic activity in the Central and Eastern United States using historical records.
    • Planning and Development Department, Planning Intern: Assist with data collection and cataloging to support incentive administration. The capstone project can be a sidewalk condition surveying or asset mapping for an internal operations app. Basic surveying and GIS experience are a plus.
    • Marketing, Communications and Events Department, Marketing Intern: Assist in creating marketing materials for the events newsletter, business newsletter, and social media platforms.

    • Archive Intern: Process, cataloging, and data entry for archival collection. Based in Marion, AR, some work can be done remotely.

    • Marketing Interns Content creation and brand management, including: social media and digital strategy; public relations and media outreach; donor engagement; event promotion; research and reporting
    • Program Intern: Conduct online research to improve the organization's databases.

    • Marketing Intern:  Create marketing materials for newsletters and social media platforms.
    • Research Intern: Collect data from local organizations and community members to gauge the necessity and potential impact of a Community Hub program. Interns will assist with interviews and surveys to collect this data. 
    • Interns will assist the AutoZone Liberty Bowl staff in various areas: artwork and design of our year-round materials, Communications/Public Relations, Digital Media/Marketing, Event Management and Sales and ticketing. They will also help plan and execute events associated with the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, including the game itself. Interns will also assist with other AutoZone Liberty Bowl events and initiatives during their term.
    • Collection Audit: Long-term project to inventory and update the cataloging of the collection. Interns would get exposure to all the major tasks of collections management: Object handling, working with registration and catalog systems, photography and documentation, condition assessment and reporting, and making appropriate storage and conservation decisions. Capstone projects could range from a portfolio of reports to creating physical storage to in-depth provenance research or a process paper.
    • Exhibitions: Design and Installation: Help with physical design, the creation of labels and didactic texts, the creation of mounts and other exhibition furniture, and the installation of the objects. A capstone project could be a portfolio of work, a case independently conceived and installed by the student, or a process paper.
    • Interpretation and Public History: Assist in updating and creating didactic and interpretive paneling, interpretive brochures, in-museum activities for different demographics, and docent scripts. Capstone projects could be a portfolio, a packet of educational or community-engagement materials, or a research paper on public interaction with our collection. This would be appropriate for students who have taken some Egyptology classes, any student interested in a museum career, or a student working with the incoming Public History faculty.
    • Visual Arts of Mexico - Exhibition Assistant: AMUM’s permanent collection includes a variety of visual arts from Mexico, dating from the pre-Columbian era until the 20th century. The museum plans an upcoming exhibition featuring art from Mexico, including Mesoamerican artifacts, hand-colored lithograph facsimiles from the Durán Codex, textiles, and Mexican Folk Art. The intern is responsible for assisting AMUM’s staff in researching these artworks, curating a successful educational and visually engaging exhibition that will stimulate a stronger knowledge of and appreciation for Mexican art and culture, and making the exhibition’s didactic content.

    • Artists as Witnesses - Exhibition Assistant: AMUM is developing an upcoming exhibition titled Artists as Witnesses, featuring artworks that capture historic events in the artist’s contemporary time. The intern is responsible for assisting AMUM staff in compiling artworks from the museum’s permanent collection that fit this theme, researching the artwork, associated artists, and historic events, and curating the exhibition. This exhibition aims to educate the public on different periods of history through the artist's perspective, as seen in their work. Some of these artworks include Samuel Crone’s painting of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, épinal prints from the Napoleonic period, Harpers Bizarre newspapers, and the Untitled screen print of the photograph "Birmingham Race Riot" by Andy Warhol.
    • Editorial assistant: Communicate with undergraduate students who are current or prospective journal authors.

    • Marketing Coordinator: Execute promotional campaigns to promote the journal to undergraduate students.

    • Social Media Coordinator: Manage the journal’s social media accounts by posting engaging material and leveraging online platform functionalities (e.g., tags, hashtags, mentions, etc.).
    • Social Media and Public Relations (1 position available) This would be an excellent position for any communications major. The primary job would be creating posts, running campaigns, and interacting with our online community.

    • Editorial Assistants (2 positions available) Reading submissions for the online and print journals. Editing pieces selected for publication, helping out the brand manager with administrative tasks
    • Bilingual Internship: Interns will help teachers with lesson preparation and classroom management, support student learning through small group instruction, and help with school event planning and logistics. The time commitment is 12 hours or 20 hours a week for 15 weeks.
    • Academic Internship: Gain hands-on experience, engage directly with diverse communities, and contribute to initiatives that make a meaningful impact. Interns will work closely with World Relief staff and clients to enhance learning opportunities and support vital community programs. Duties may include English language tutoring, digital literacy assistance, providing transportation to clients to educational programs and helping clients learn to navigate grocery stores and understanding food labels. 
    • Bilingual Internship: Interns will assist with hands-on care for rescued dogs, including transportation to the vet and medication administration. They would also help create bilingual (Spanish/English) social media and email content. Time commitment is 12 hours or 20 hours a week for 15 weeks.
    • Data and Research Intern: Interns will conduct data research, including interviewing program participants about their experiences in the program. They will also compare aggregate data and assist in drafting a report to be presented at Girls Inc. Town Hall meetings.
    • Communications and Marketing Intern: Playback Memphis is seeking an intern skilled in communications and marketing to support ongoing social media, e-newsletters, donor communication, and event collaterals.
  • Property Power and Preservation
    • Program Intern: Gain hands-on experience in historic preservation, grant research and writing, project coordination, and community engagement. Interns can work on projects such as the Griggs Business College Renovation Project and other culturally significant sites, supporting our efforts to secure funding, engage with local stakeholders, and promote educational programming that preserves and shares these important histories.
    • Program InternThe ImagineU Summer Entrepreneurship Accelerator program is a unique, immersive and intensive 12-week entrepreneurial experience in which students learn and live the early stages of their entrepreneurship journey. This program emphasizes diversity and inclusion. During the program, students will identify problems at the intersections of their passion, experience and knowledge. They will start a company with other students around the most compelling and feasible opportunities identified in the early stages of the program.
    • Narrative Design Intern - The Crews Center Narrative Design Intern will play a key role in shaping how stories of innovation, creativity, and student entrepreneurship are told on the UofM campus. Using Crews Center data, student interviews, writing, and visual content, Fellows will create narratives highlighting the journeys of UofM campus ventures. Interns will also support summer activities at the Crews Center for Entrepreneurship that engage with ImagineU collegiate and secondary school programs.
    • Marketing Intern: Epicenter Memphis has multiple events throughout the year that need videography and content creation support. They are seeking an intern to create short-form and long-form promos and recap videos. The intern could potentially have the opportunity to work on more graphic design as well.
    • Events Intern: This role involves assisting with event logistics, coordinating with vendors, managing communications, and ensuring smooth event operations. The intern will gain hands-on experience in event management while learning about the startup ecosystem, economic development strategies, and innovation-driven growth.
    • Client Onboarding: Send a welcome package to new clients, including essential business planning tools and resources. Ensure all materials are up-to-date and tailored to client needs.
    • Training Coordination: Assist clients in identifying relevant training opportunities, including self-paced VOD courses. Register clients for training sessions and provide necessary follow-up information.
    • Client Follow-up: Follow up regularly with clients to confirm business progress. Encourage client participation in TSBDC surveys and gather feedback on services provided.
