Topic: Effective Writing Techniques
Speaker: Mr. Thomas J. Walsh, Jr.
About our Speaker:
A Memphis native, Thomas J. Walsh, Jr. (who prefers that we call him "Tom") has practiced law in Memphis for 45 years. He serves as Counsel with the local office of a national law firm with international affiliates, Ford Harrison.
A graduate of Yale University (B.A. English) and the University of Virginia School of Law (J.D.), Tom specializes in appellate advocacy. He has written briefs for hundreds of appeals in state and federal courts, including several before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Before entering law school, Tom taught English at a Memphis public high school. Over the years since then, mostly as a volunteer, he has led writing seminars for a variety of groups. These include high school and college students, law school students, lawyers and judges, and legal departments at such area institutions as St. Jude Hospital and local government agencies. He has received awards for his legal writing, and for each of the past ten years his professional peers have chosen him to be listed in The Best Lawyers in America.
Tom also volunteers in our community in other ways, working in faith-based organizations, public elementary schools, hospitals, soup kitchens, and prisons, and he is a charter member of the National Civil Rights Museum.
He has two grown daughters and three granddaughters, with a fourth due soon.
