The UofM School of Public Health and Shelby County Health Department Speaker Series concluded on Friday, April 11, 2025

April 11, 2025 - Throughout the semester, the School has hosted a variety of engaging speakers who provided valuable insights into the operations and impact of the Shelby County Health Department. The final event was no exception, featuring two distinguished guests: Dr. Jennifer Kmet, Chief Epidemiologist, and Karen Cook-Pryor, Deputy Administrator for Environmental Health Services and Sustainability.

Dr. Kmet leads the Office of Epidemiology and Informatics, which is responsible for producing much of the public health data that informs regional decision-making. This includes data on deaths, homicides, infections, exposures, substance use, vaccinations, and more.

Ms. Cook-Pryor discussed several key areas within Environmental Health, including Food Safety, Vector Control, and the Childhood Lead Poisoning Prevention Program. She also emphasized an important reminder: service is defined as an activity or benefit that one party can offer to another. Public service, she noted, strengthens communities, protects public interests, and supports the well-being of others.
