UofM implementing test-flexible admissions policy for fall 2021 class
June 17, 2020 - 榴莲直播 will adopt a test-flexible application policy for the entering class of fall 2021 due to disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic. This is a one-year policy to provide a fair and reassuring response to the needs of future Tigers.
The move means that students applying to the UofM for fall 2021 will not be required to submit standardized test scores from the ACT or SAT.
High school students are feeling added stress around the college admission process during the global health crisis, including cancellations of ACT and SAT tests. Freshman applicants who submit an official GPA but were unable to take the ACT or SAT test will be reviewed holistically. The UofM Admissions and Orientation staff will utilize a test-flexible evaluation process which considers alternative factors for review. These factors include, but are not limited to, Pre-ACT, PSAT, Dual Enrollment grades and AP/IB grades. Applicants will not be asked to submit these test scores; the UofM will use any score already in the applicant鈥檚 file.

鈥淩egardless of the review method used, we will under no circumstances admit a student who we do not think can be successful at the UofM,鈥� said Dr. Eric Stokes, director of Admissions and Orientation. 鈥淭est-flexible does not mean we disregard standardized test scores, as we acknowledge the value added by them. It only means that we recognize there are other factors that contribute to the prediction of college success.鈥�
The UofM believes the strength of a student鈥檚 high school curriculum and academic performance, extracurricular activities, leadership and other factors contribute to a student鈥檚 success potential. Even before the pandemic, the University considered institutional research data to guide its admissions criteria, knowing standardized tests are one variable in its review process.
While the policy will only be in effect for first-time freshmen applying for the fall 2021 semester, the UofM will assess the status of the plan and determine a strategy for future enrollees later this cycle.
