Doctor of Musical Arts, Music Theory Concentration

Andrew Manka HeadshotAt the University of Memphis, we take pride in the diverse and accomplished graduate students who contribute to our academic community. We鈥檙e excited to feature Andrew Alan Manka, a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) student specializing in Music Theory. Originally from Anchorage, Alaska, Andrew is set to graduate in Spring 2026 and has a powerful story of perseverance, passion, and dedication to his craft.

Pursuing a Dream in Music

For Andrew, pursuing a DMA was a strategic decision to enhance his career opportunities in the highly competitive field of music. 鈥淏y enrolling in the University of Memphis鈥 DMA program, I鈥檓 getting a terminal-level music education, collegiate teaching experience, and ensuring that my r茅sum茅 is as competitive as possible when I begin my job search,鈥 he shares.

One of the biggest draws to UofM was the opportunity to study with the late Dr. Lily Afshar, a world-renowned Iranian guitarist and the first woman in the world to earn a doctorate in guitar. Though her passing was a profound loss, Andrew has continued his studies under Dr. Patrick Sutton, whose mentorship has helped shape his journey.

From Rock & Roll to Classical MasteryAndrew Manka

Andrew鈥檚 musical path started early鈥攖aking classical piano lessons with his grandmother and playing guitar in a local metal band. However, his college journey introduced him to a completely new side of music.

鈥淚 anticipated college would be an extension of the rock & roll guitar I practiced as a teenager,鈥 Andrew recalls. Instead, he found himself immersed in classical guitar, studying intricate compositions and diving deep into music theory. Though he initially struggled with reading sheet music, his technical abilities and dedication propelled him forward. Over time, he developed a love for Spanish guitar masters and the works of J.S. Bach.

After earning his master鈥檚 degree, Andrew returned to Alaska to start a music academy, but he felt his education was incomplete. This realization led him back to graduate school at UofM, where he is now thriving as both a performer and educator.

A Rewarding Graduate Experience

Andrew MankaOne of the most fulfilling aspects of Andrew鈥檚 time at UofM has been gaining hands-on teaching experience. 鈥淪tepping in front of college-level music classes and feeling 100% confident in my expertise as a professor has been invaluable,鈥 he says.

He鈥檚 also been actively performing and presenting, with several upcoming performances at the end of the semester. 鈥淐heck out my social media and the University of Memphis School of Music pages for announcements!鈥

Overcoming Challenges & Advice for Future DMA Students

Like many graduate students, Andrew has faced the challenge of balancing coursework, rehearsals, teaching, research, and personal life. His key to success? Time management and a strong support network.

鈥淏uilding a community of peers and mentors has been essential,鈥 he explains. 鈥淎t higher levels of education, mental health is crucial to performing at your full potential.鈥

For students considering a Doctor of Musical Arts degree, he offers this advice:

  • Know your goals. Ask yourself, How will a DMA help me achieve my career aspirations?
  • Make the most of your time. A DMA alone isn鈥檛 enough鈥攜ou need to gain skills, network, and pursue opportunities that align with your career path.

Looking Ahead: Teaching, Performing & Expanding Music Education

After earning his DMA, Andrew hopes to teach full-time at a college while continuing his performance career. He also plans to expand his music academy beyond Alaska and bring high-quality music education to more students.
