Dr. Chang's Research in National News

Dr. Cyril Chang, professor of Economics, was recently commissioned by the Center for
Mississippi Health Policy to conduct research on the economic impact of rural hospitals
and their effect on Mississippi communities. Dr. Chang's work made national health
headlines. Other researchers included Dr. Maya McDoom-Echebiri, Mississippi State
University, Dr. John Gnuschke, Sparks Bureau, and Dr. David Mirvis, Methodist Le Bonheur
Center for Healthcare Economics.
In a financial management story, the reported that 31 rural hospitals in Mississippi were so financially vulnerable that they were at risk of closure. The impact of the nine "most-at-risk" hospitals would result in a loss of 2,600 jobs, $8.6 million in state and local tax revenue, and generate a $289.2 million economic impact.
