Students will review and critique each others written assignments and use class time to workshop ideas. This will allow students to help one another develop better research questions, overcome research hurdles, and avoid discouragement. By the end of the semester, students will be expected to develop a clear research question, supported by a relevant and useful literature review, and leading to an appropriate and executable research methodology. Required Text Ruszkiewicz, J. & Dolmage, J. (2010). How to write anything: A guide and reference. Boston: Bedford St. Martins Press. [ISBN: 978-0-312-53278-9] Other supplemental reading will be assigned throughout the semester, including selected sections from: Locke, F., Spirduso, W. & Silverman, S. (2000). Prepare a bulleted list that describes the purposes and attributes of a good literature review to be discussed in class. Google the phrase lit review, or what is a literature review, or how to write a lit review, or lit review planning, or some combination thereof to find a bounty of useful information. Read at least two lit reviews from the Journal of Planning Literature to help set your new understand of lit reviews in the context of planning. Provide citations for the reviews you have read along with the bulleted list. Assignment 2: Your Research Problem In 500 words or less, prepare a written statement that: Defines a researchable issue (thesis-style capstone) / or solvable problem (project-style capstone) Demonstrates awareness of the context of the issue or problem (previous literature and/or relevant plans, policies, programs, etc.) Introduces your perspective and your pending contribution Assignment 3: Annotated Bibliography Assignment 4: Background/Lit Review This assignment represents the second block in a series of three building blocks that will comprise your complete research proposal. Youve already completed (or at least started) the first building block in Assignment 2: Your Research Problem. Some expanded / revised version of what you wrote for that assignment will form the introduction of your proposal. If youve done it right, that research problem statement provides a glimpse of background (as you put your issue/problem in context) and hints at how your issues has been framed in the existing literature. This second building block provides a more detailed exploration of the background and context for your research in the form of a literature review. (From your first assignment, you all know what a lit review is, and what a good lit review accomplishes.) Your summary of the literature should justify your research question, and support your research approach and methodology (i.e., demonstrate that your research problem is a real thing/ is worth tackling/ hasnt already been tackled [completely]/ is tackle-able). Do not write the lit review as a stand alone piece; think of it as an element of a larger paper (your full research proposal). Therefore, you do not have to write a separate introduction to the lit review. Your conclusion to the lit review should provide a transition into the discussion of your research approach/methodology to follow. How long should it be? As long as it takes to provide as useful and relevant review of the literature. Assignment 5: Methodology/Research Design This assignment represents the final block in the series of three building blocks that will comprise your complete research proposal. The first block was your research problem statement, which defines a researchable issue/solvable problem, and introduces your perspective/pending contribution. (Some version of this will serve as the introduction to your proposal.) The second block was the lit review/background, which establishes context, justifies your research question, and supports the research approach/methodology you are about to present. Now, having introduced a researchable problem and demonstrated that its a real thing that is worth tackling which hasnt already been tackled [completely], your final task is to tell the reader how youre going to go about addressing the problem. So its not heres WHAT Im going to do its heres HOW Im going to do it. The contents of this section will vary widely from proposal to proposal depending on the task at hand, but youll need to lay out in some fashion the steps you will take address the issue identified in your problem statement. And youll need to do so in enough detail to demonstrate that you know what youre doing. So, for example, if youre findings will be based on some empirical statistical analysis, youll need to explain what data youll be using, where youll get it, what your hypotheses are, and how you will test them. If youre product will require interviews or a survey, youll need to explain who youll be surveying, how youll conduct the survey, and what some of the important questions will be. If youre using a case study (or case studies) to examine the merits of a particular theory or approach or to test a hypothesis, youll need to explain what makes the particular case youve chosen a good subject. If youll be preparing a plan, youll need to describe what your planning process will be. And if your scope has not been made clear in the intro, you will need to make it clear here.
