This is an indicator that the Normal Station/Buntyn Messick residents do not have access to well-paying jobs, possibly because of lack of educational attainment, lack of adequate transportation facilities, or similar disadvantages. This might also suggest that Normal Station/Buntyn Messick households are smaller, and therefore have fewer wage earners per household, thus limiting potential income. These factors must be further investigated to help determine the roots of the neighborhoods slow pace of the residents income. . . Blacks comprise about 95% of the overall population, followed by Caucasians with a total of almost 4%, as can be seen in Table B below. These figures reflect a much greater homogeneity than that of the county at large which boasts a much more even distribution of whites and blacks with 47% and 48%, respectively. There was a decrease of 2.2% in the number of Caucasians in the area from the 1990 census. However, this decrease was not completely accounted for in an overall increase in the number of African Americans, who increased by less than 1%. Interestingly enough, the majority of increase in population was accounted for by Asians and other racial groups, a trend that will be explored in more detail later in the report. The concern for Binghampton arises in where the population is decreasing. From 1990 to 2000 the neighborhood experience 22% and 44% decrease in the young adult population ages 15 19 and 20 24 respectively as compared to Shelby County which exhibited negligible growth or loss in these age groups. This loss in young adult population may be attributed to migration, incarceration, or lower birthrate. In addition to the loss in young adults, Binghampton has also experienced a 30% decrease in population aged 0 to 4 years.
