English Proficiency Requirements

Demonstrated English language proficiency is required of all international students.  English proficiency may be satisfied by:

  1. Citizenship from an English-speaking country AND your native language is English, or your language of instruction in high school or college was English.
  2. A minimum score or greater on any of the following English language tests:

  3. A minimum score or greater on any of the following exams:

    SAT                                               540 on the Evidence-Based Reading and Writing section         
    ACT 21 English sub-score
    IB International Baccalaureate  Grade 5 on the Higher-Level English A1 subject
    GED/HiSet 450 GED / 45 HiSet
    Cambridge International Education (CIE) Exams
    GCE/GCSE/IGCSE
    (International) General Certificate of (Secondary) Education
    B or higher in English Language or English First Language
  4. Apply to and participate in the Intensive English for Internationals (IEI) program to gain English proficiency certification and secure full admission to the University of Memphis. The IEI program will help you develop the necessary English language and academic skills to succeed in your program of study at the University of Memphis.   5. Have completed at least one semester of English Composition with a C or better at a college/university in the US or in one of the approved English-speaking countries. **
  6. Graduated high school in the US or one of the approved English-Speaking countries with at least two years of enrollment at that school.
  7. Submit a letter from your school stating the language of instruction***

*English Proficiency Exams Requirements:

  • When submitting scores, please ensure that the name and birthdate on your score report match the information on your application and the information on your passport.
  • Test scores expire after 2 years. Tests must be taken within two years prior to applying.
  • Expired scores are accepted for students who have been continuously enrolled at a college or university in an approved English-speaking country since before the scores expired.
  • Students must submit unofficial score reports at the time of application submission and have official score reports sent directly to the University of Memphis for verification. Admission decisions are not made on the basis of unverified language proficiency test scores.   

**English Proficiency Transcript Requirements: 

  • Student must have official transcript sent directly to the University of Memphis 

***English Proficiency Medium of Insturction Requirements: 

  • The Admission Committee has the discretion to accept or deny letters attesting to the student’s English proficiency. If your letter is denied, you must show some other proof of English proficiency for admission.
